Research summary
The aim of the study is to ascertain and document the experiences and perceptions of parents who have participated in parent-mediated early intervention for young children with autism spectrum disorder.
Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust offers ‘More than words’ training to parents of young children with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Parents attend five taught sessions led by trained speech and language therapists (SLT). Three home visits are also offered with SLT supported video-coaching with their child. The current study aims to look at the secondary benefits of this type of parent-mediated training such as reduced parent stress, increased parental self-efficacy and improved family functioning. Parent’s experiences of this type of training will be explored through semi-structured interviews. Interviews will be conducted with 6-10 parents who have attended the training within the last 12 months. Interviews will be conducted at parent’s homes or a local children’s centre. Interviews will take 30 minutes. The interviews will then be transcribed, anonymised and a thematic analysis will be carried out. The study will be completed by June 2019.
