Research summary
We are planning to conduct a research study to explore a new way of looking at the pancreas: an organ in the body that is responsible for producing insulin. At present, there is no way of externally seeing the cells of the pancreas that release insulin. We are developing a scanning technique at the University of Edinburgh that offers a unique opportunity to see, to assess and to monitor these insulin-producing cells. This has the potential to transform how we treat and assess diabetes as well as laying the foundation for approaches to prevent diabetes altogether. This study will involve patients with type 1 diabetes and healthy volunteers. All participants will be required to have a blood test and a magnetic resonance imaging scan of their pancreas as part of the study. Patients with type 1 diabetes will be recruited from the diabetes and endocrinology clinics and healthy volunteers will be recruited via advertisements on the university website and flyers in cardiology and endocrinology clinics. This study is funded by the British Heart Foundation.
