Research summary
Blockage of the bowel due to cancer or it’s treatments (malignant bowel obstruction) affects around one in six people with cancer. It is one of the most distressing complications of cancer stopping people’s ability to eat and drink, causing severe pain, nausea and vomiting, and death. It has a constant and deep effect on quality of life and remains a challenging condition facing clinical care teams. Making decisions about treatment can be difficult as there are no nationally agreed guidelines.
The aim of this study is to gain an understanding of the recent history and current management of those patients admitted to hospital with malignant bowel obstruction without such nationally agreed guidance.
We aim to undertake a historical cohort study of patients admitted to two separate hospitals. We will identify patients through hospital coding for a diagnosis of malignant bowel obstruction and follow them from the time of those records to the present or death. We aim to gather data with regards to age, sex, cancer diagnosis, cancer treatments, survival, length of hospital stay, number of hospitalisations, place of death, physical function, nutritional status, quality of life, symptoms and decision making.
At the end of the study we aim to have data to identify which clinical characteristics and treatments are associated with better outcomes.
