  • Data collection arrangements

At our specialist services, we treat many adults and children with complex chronic pain problems. These problems are hard to treat and cause a lot of suffering; thus, it is important to understand them as well as possible, and to work out what makes treatment work most effectively. When people undergo clinical treatment, they complete a number of clinical measures - they do questionnaires and physical tests. We mainly use these for clinical purposes, but we plan to ask patients whether they are happy for us to use this data for research as well. We will gain full, written informed consent for this. However, it should not be too difficult for patients, as we are just asking their permission to use information that has already been given. \nWe will put all of this information onto a database (the PAIRED Bath and Bristol database), and it will become a great resource to look at how and why some people struggle so much with pain, and why some people benefit from treatment and some do not.

  • Research programme

Our unit has a strong history of doing good research in adult and child chronic pain. In the past, we have published studies on how particular coping styles affect functioning with pain, on treatment outcomes, and we have developed new measures (specialist questionnaires) that help researchers all across the world research these conditions. We plan to carry on this work, focusing particularly on the active components of effective treatment. We have good links with colleagues at the University of Bath and the University of the West of England, and there are possibilities to share research with similar units in the USA and Sweden.
