Research summary
Pain management following scoliosis surgery is challenging and could possibly be sub-optimal. Managing pain expectation is part of effective post-operative pain control and accurately understanding pain expectation and anxiety is thus essential. Despite intensive efforts of a multi-disciplinary team at UHS, it is not currently clear how much these factors play a role. There is some data on management of peri-operative anxiety and how this affects pain post-operatively. However, research into pain expectation comparative to post-operative actual pain experienced is limited and have demonstrated conflicting findings. Baseline study in our patients will enable us to improve care and plan effective evidence based interventions.
