Research summary
The literature suggests that hand patients have un or underdiagnosed mental health conditions that impact their outcome from hand surgery. However, hand patients are not routinely asked about or assessed for psychological factors during their treatment. Prevalence reported in hand surgery clinics is presumed to be higher in hand therapy, but this is not supported by evidence yet.
Study participants will complete a booklet of questionnaires at the start of the study (baseline visit) and then receive a postal questionnaire after 3 months with the same questionnaires and a section addressing appropriateness and acceptability to patients of asking these questions.
