Research summary
Type 2 diabetes in children and young people is a growing problem. Research suggests that this group are particularly at risk of poor health outcomes and diabetes complications. Research also shows that there are considerable barriers to effective treatment in this group. This study aims to gain insight into the experiences of children/young people with type 2 diabetes and their parents/guardians and to gain their views on the most helpful ways to improve and develop services. Specifically, the research aims to gather information around the following:
• Current experiences of and views about treatment from the perspective of the young person and their family
• Experiences and views around compliance with treatment
• What has been most and least helpful about the service they have received
• Information on preferences around treatment and ideas for improving servicesThe study will invite all children/young people with a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes and their parents/carers to take part in an interview. This data will then be analysed using thematic analysis to identify key themes and patterns from the data. This will then be used to develop a care pathway for children and young people with type 2 diabetes and improve services for them.
