Data collection arrangements
The PICANet database collects data on all children and young people accepted for referral, transported or admitted to paediatric intensive care units throughout the UK.
Data is collected on patient demographics; referral, transport and admission details; diagnosis; interventions received and outcomes.
Customised data collections are carried out from time to time which collect additional clinical data items specific to an area of care or in response to local or national policy requirements.Within England, Wales and Scotland direct patient identifiers are collected to allow identification of multiple admissions, referrals and transports for the same individual, making the dataset person and episode-based.
Within Northern Ireland, pseudonymised data are collected, containing only indirect identifiers.Data is collected from PICUs and Specialist Paediatric Critical Care Transport Services via a secure web based application and held securely by the University of Leeds.
Data collection has been ongoing since 2002.Data are used to:
- Measure and improve the quality of care provided (clinical audit and quality improvement).
- Define the supply, demand and outcomes for paediatric critical care services and the patient population using the service (service evaluation).
- Extend the available knowledge with a view to ultimately providing benefits to patients (research).Research programme
The database supports high quality research in the areas of: - paediatric intensive care - specific conditions affecting children and young people accessing paediatric intensive care services (e.g. cardiac, neurological, infection, trauma) - epidemiology of critical illness - public health, including the impact of Covid-19 - service evaluation, clinical audit or research methodology to extend the available knowledge with a view to ultimately providing benefits to patients. The project has had Research Ethics Committee (REC) approval as a Research Database since July 2005 (ref 18/EM/0267). Under this approval, research can be carried out either by the PICANet Database Research Team or by sharing de-identified data with other researchers. Data may also be shared for the purposes of research if the recipient has their own project specific-research ethics approval in place and appropriate legal basis for data sharing. Any application for the use of data for research purposes is subject to a thorough review and approval process.
