Research summary
Growing research demonstrates videoconsultations (VC) are an acceptable way to communicate with patients (Fatehi et al.2014), however no research exists in specialist paediatric dietetics, where care is delivered at a distance from the specialist children's hospital. A regional audit in 2016 (unpublished data) revealed inequalities in access to specialist renal paediatric dietetic care. We would like to research the acceptability of using VC to deliver specialist renal dietetic advice to families who cannot access timely, quality advice locally. Following a VC (received at the patients home) with a renal paediatric dietitian (from the Nephrology centre), the researcher will use a qualitative telephone interview to discover the opinions and experiences of families. The researcher will also interview the specialist renal paediatric dietitian, delivering the VC, to capture thoughts on engagement and check dietary information delivered. We need to understand acceptability, patient/parent engagement with the dietitian via VC, and if the dietary messages are felt to be be understood. We would like to explore if families find this communication method a beneficial alternative to telephone care or local (non - specialist) dietetic care. The research will also fulfil the requirements of the Masters in Clinical Research programme at the University of Plymouth. The data collection period will run over six months to capture 15-20 patients from all regions of the South West of England. Patient interviews will last less than 30 minutes, organised at a mutually convenient time, but within 72 hours of the VC. The additional impact to families includes time to explain the study, take consent and the interview. Prior data collection will include age of child, type/stage of kidney disease, and approximate living distance from specialist renal centre.
