Research summary
Education of diabetic patients is vital to ensure they understand the various aspects of the condition and how to control these aspects in daily life to help minimize the burden of the condition on the individual. Education for a type 1 diabetic starts at diagnosis and for younger patients there can be several important transitional periods where it may be appropriate to deliver more education regarding these changes; for example transition from primary to secondary school. The research aims to look at the educational packages that are offered and evaluate them to see if improvements could be made. These altered programmes may then be delivered to the patient, with blood samples taken pre and post educational intervention to attempt to measure any difference in clinical outcomes, as well as potentially asking the patients their own views on the education they receive to see if their opinions could offer ideas for improvement in the services delivered.
