Research summary
This research study aims to explore the experiences of families with a young person with a diagnosis of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) during the early adolescent period. It will focus on understanding how family dynamics and identities are negotiated and navigated across this period, particularly in relation to the transition to self-management of T1DM.
It is important to gather reflections on the family dynamics, roles and tensions at this developmental stage as it is a time of significant transition and change, and the effective management of T1DM requires a joint approach. Clinically, understanding what helps and hinders families experiencing paediatric T1DM is important in enabling these families to maintain good relationships and support good diabetes outcomes in the early adolescent period. The research will gather the experiences of both parents/carers and the child. The child will be between the ages of 16 and 19 at the time of interview, and will have been diagnosed with T1DM prior to the age of 10. There will be no exclusion based on family make up. Participants will be recruited via an NHS Paediatric Diabetes Service and interviews will be held at the service. Families will attend an interview of approximately 60 minutes in length with parent(s)/carer(s) and child being interviewed together. Prior to the interview, participants will be required to individually complete a timeline of the child's 10 - 14 age range which they will populate with events or experiences which they perceive as being important. The timelines will be used to facilitate discussion in the interview.
