  • Research summary

Peptamen Junior® 1.5 (ONS) is a drinkable version of extended Peptamen family range and is suitable for paediatric patients who can consume an ONS.

Malnutrition is a state of nutrition in which a deficiency or excess (or imbalance) of energy, protein and other nutrients causes measurable adverse effects on body shape, size and composition as well as function and clinical outcome, and can be caused by a variety of childhood conditions including chronic diarrhoea, Cystic Fibrosis, Neuro disability, Oncology diagnosis etc.
ONS may reduce the risk and impact of disease-related malnutrition in children, providing cost savings on hospital outcomes as well as in the community.

To address the nutritional needs of these children with gastrointestinal intolerances, a nutritionally complete ONS formula was developed and trialed in Fifteen children (6 Male :9 Female, mean BMI Z score -0.55) of which all completed the 7-day trial. On day 7 on completion of the study 21% reported an improvement in GI symptoms. Eighty five percent reported no worsening of GI symptoms. 57% were able to consume the recommended volume. Overall compliance was satisfactory.

In view of the change to a new whey protein and packaging change we would like to review the acceptability, tolerance and compliance of the revised formulation.

This study is a single arm, prospective, multi-centre study that will include fifteen (15) paediatric participants who are well established and stable on their current nutritional support regimen.
Participants will receive a 7 day supply of the ONS, and will be asked to complete a daily diary and short questionnaire to evaluate the gastrointestinal tolerance, compliance, palatability and Patient/Caregiver satisfaction.
The recruitment period will be 12 months.
