Research summary
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the commonest cause of dementia. It is known that increased levels of inflammation in the brain are associated with AD. However, it is not clear if levels of inflammation in the brain (including what is termed microglial activation) in AD change over time and potentially contribute to the decline in memory seen in AD. We propose to investigate the levels of inflammation in the brain of subjects with preclinical and mild AD by means of a Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan of the brain as well as markers in the blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of people with AD.
