Research summary
This study aims to gain insight into patient experience of two different oral anticoagulation treatments; warfarin and rivaroxaban. It also aims to identify and understand the barriers and incentives to treatment adherence. Twenty to thirty patients, who have been prescribed anticoagulation treatment for a minimum of one year, will be interviewed.
The objectives are:
• To understand qualitative differences in patient experience with warfarin compared to rivaroxaban• To identify factors influencing adherence in patients on warfarin and rivaroxaban
• To better understand the relationship between patients’ qualitative experience and adherence to warfarin and rivaroxaban
• To identify possible areas for intervention that may enhance patient adherence to warfarin or rivaroxaban
• To give clear direction for further quantitative or mixed-methods research in this area.
• To suggest practical recommendations to help clinical services assess patient suitability for the two anticoagulation treatments in addition to giving direction for interventions to enhance patient adherence.
