  • Research summary

    Whilst fewer people are developing heart disease over time, this reduction has not been seen in people under 60 years old. This trend is more pronounced in South Asian people, where heart disease occurs even earlier, suggesting potential genetic and lifestyle factors contributing to early onset.

    While our usual focus lies in assisting individuals who have already experienced heart problems, we often neglect prevention in their families, such as siblings. Sometimes these people approach healthcare services concerned about their family history, and doctors do not have enough knowledge to confidently offer them appropriate advice or treatments.

    Addressing this issue are the Barts CVD Risk and Lipids clinic and the Bloomsbury Centre for Clinical Phenotyping, who are dedicated to understanding why some South Asian families experience early-onset heart disease. The clinic sees over 100 young South Asians each year, most of whom reside in the same area with their families. This provides a valuable opportunity to delve deeper into these families and develop strategies for early prevention.

    The study aims to survey 40 individuals who experienced early heart problems and enquire if they and their families would be willing to participate in a study to understand heart disease risk. We will assess their willingness to undergo more detailed tests, such as heart imaging, blood analysis, and genetic profiling. These tests will aim to uncover why certain families have a higher risk. Some of those who are willing to participate, along with their families will be invited to attend the Bloomsbury Centre to have these tests. We will aim to conduct tests on ~20 people in total.

    This is a pilot study, aiming to demonstrate the practical feasibility of recruiting patients from the Barts Clinic for further testing at the Bloomsbury Centre.
