Research summary
This study will observe the retinal vessel oxygen saturation and retinal oxygen consumption in patients suffering from retinal vein occlusions. Retinal vein occlusion occurs when one of the tiny retinal veins becomes blocked by a blood clot. This means that blood cannot drain away from the retina as easily and there is a backlog of blood in the blood vessels of the retina. This can lead to a build-up of pressure in the blood vessels. As a result, fluid and blood start to leak from the blood vessels, which can damage and cause swelling of the retina, affecting your eyesight.
To date little is known about the mechanisms underlying the progression of vision loss in these patients linked to a change in oxygen saturation. We will examine patients close to the event of the occlusion, and then follow them up at 3, 6, 12 and 24 month post occlusion to evaluate their visual function, oxygen saturation levels and structural and systemic parameters (such as blood pressure, inflammatory markers, vessel calibres and retinal thickness).REC name
