Research summary
Chair-based group exercise has now been established as a recognised beneficial form of physical activity for older frailer individuals either with low exercise capacity and/or balance and coordination limitations. As there is an increasing number of people surviving and living with cardiac disease into older age, traditional forms of exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation may pose too challenging for them. The aim of this research is to see how physiologically demanding a standardised chair-based exercise routine is, originally designed for a falls prevention programme, for people recovering from coronary heart disease and heart failure. This choice of activity could then be used as an alternative choice for some individuals within cardiac rehabilitation services. During a routine chair-based exercise session a group of cardiac rehabilitation participants will have their oxygen usage (via expired air collection), heart rate and ratings of perceived exertion measured. This current and first study will use cardiac rehabilitation participants for whom chair-based exercise would be expected to be easier than their current programme. This information can then be used to gain insight into preparing a study to assess the same parameters in older frailer groups. Ultimately it can inform practitioners of the value and suitability of providing the option for chair-based activity in cardiac rehabilitation for those with low capacity and/or balance and coordination limitations.
