  • Data collection arrangements

This registry will use NHS records to identify patients who may have suffered a stroke or mini-stroke in the past 10 years, from lists of people who have been discharged from a stroke unit, attended a specialist stroke clinic or who have been recorded as having a stroke in hospital statistics. Their medical details won't be accessed, but they will be sent an invitation letter offering the opportunity to be included in the registry so that they can be contacted if a research study begins that they would be suitable for. Once they have been sent an invitation, the initial screening data will be deleted.
If recipients are interested in receiving invitations to future research studies, they can return a consent form providing permission for their medical records, identification information and contact details to be stored, and for them to be contacted if a suitable study starts. The registry will contain their name, date of birth and NHS number, and whether they fulfil the criteria to be part of any study they are screened for.

  • Research programme

The database will provide a resource of individuals with a previous stroke who are interested in participating in future research studies. This will be available to researchers accredited by the principal Registry investigator (Prof Peter Rothwell) for studies that have national ethical approval and local approval by the University of Oxford. Initially, this will principally be used by the CPSD to invite suitable individuals for small clinical trials and observational studies in patients who have had a previous stroke, with the aim of developing treatments to prevent stroke in the future.
