  • Research summary

This is a mostly qualitative study (but may include some quantitative data to build an overall picture) of remote support for heart failure patients using tele health. It is part of a wider series of case studies ('SCALS') of efforts to introduce and support assisted living with the help of technologies. This study consists of two sub-studies:

SUB-STUDY 1: Linked to the SUPPORT-HF trial, we will undertake a qualitative evaluation of aspects of the trial, especially home-based semi-structured interviews with up to 20 patients and work-based interviews with up to 10 staff. The home-based interviews will have an ethnographic component (that is, we will make field notes about aspects of the home environment).

SUB-STUDY 2: Linked to the community based, nurse-led heart failure support team in Oxfordshire CCG, we will use action research methods to help these staff optimise tele health support and in particular, support the introduction, organisational embedding and evaluation of a novel, video based consultation service in which the heart failure nurse connects with the patient via Skype or Facetime. Subject to consent, we will video some of these consultations in up to 10 participants.

The data from these two sub-studies will be combined with desk research on national policy and wider context for telehealth in heart failure, to produce a detailed case study of the challenges and opportunities for this service model.
