Data collection arrangements
The CI Dr Turner is leading a biomarker study in motor neuron disease (REC ref. 08/H0605/85). This involves the
removal and analysis of CSF and serum samples from patients and some healthy volunteers. The samples collected
in this current application will provide a valuable additional pool of 'disease/symptom' controls to refine the specificity of
any candidate biomarkers.
The aim of the biomarker bank is to further the discovery of specific biomarkers of neurological disorders(primarily
neurodegenerative disorders and neuroinflammatory disorders) with the hope of improving the diagnostic process and
therapeutic monitoring. The policy of this bank is to store CSF and serum samples that are being removed as part of
the routine clinical management in patients being investigated for neurological symptoms at the John Radcliffe
Hospital. This will be done with written informed consent prior to removal. Storage of samples will be in accordance
with good laboratory practice, and any clinical data will be held anonymously and securely.
Release of samples to other research groups will be at the discretion of the CI Dr Turner, for the benefit of biomarker
discovery, and would not include the release of the associated hospital number or other personally identifiable clinical
data.Research programme
Samples will be stored frozen in anonymised coded form. The code will be linked in two separate passwordprotected files held on secure Oxford University computers accessible only by the primary investigator and tissue bank curator: 1. One file will link the code to the NHS hospital number. 2. The other file will link the code to the diagnosis (or the reason for CSF removal if diagnosis not clear), the age in years of the subject at the time of donation (not date of birth), and gender of subject i.e. personally identifiable.
