Research summary
Obesity is a major health concern leading to increases in both physical and mental disorders. Individual differences, genetics and environmental influences have been shown to impact obesity and unsuccessful weight loss. There are currently no case studies known to us documenting weight loss history in clinically obese individuals. As part of a PhD project, a student (DTL) will undertake a case study review on this population.
Barts Obesity, Diabetes and Metabolic (BODaM) clinicians see clinically obese patients currently seeking to lose weight. BODaM clinic is affiliated with the Health and Lifestyles Unit (HLU) at Queen Mary and therefore a well-placed site to recruit participants.
Eligible participants will be identified by BODaM clinicians and if they fit the eligibility criteria will be given information and asked if they would be happy to be contacted by DTL to discuss further. Interested participants will attend HLRU where DTL will go through the information sheet and answer any questions they may have. If interested a consent form, including permission to obtain their last weight and waist measurement from the BOMaD, will be completed.
Open-ended interviews will be conducted over 1 session lasting approximately 1.5 hours.Interviews will be recorded and summarized, after which recordings will be destroyed. Once interviews are completed participants will have ended their involvement in the study. Participants may indicate if they are interested in receiving their study summary. Participants will be compensated £10 on completion of the interviews.
Summaries will be anonymized for publication and for a PhD chapter discussing the challenges facing obese individuals attempting to lose weight.REC name
