Research summary
The OuTSMART trial reported that patients with antibodies against their transplanted kidney were at higher risk of transplant failure at 3 years compared to those with antibodies (not directed to donor kidney) and those without antibodies. OuTSMART was the largest cohort of kidney transplant patients to be randomised in a clinical trial in the UK.
The main research question is to determine the risk factors, which include baseline characteristics and type, source and persistence of donor specific antibodies as well as other variables collected as part of the OuTSMART study and from NHS Blood and Transplant which are associated with long term patient and transplant outcomes (patient and graft survival, rejection and recurrent disease rates and graft function).
This outcome data is available from NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT). In addition NHSBT have further data on the transplants which was not collected in the OuTSMART trial.
