  • Research summary

Children with inflammatory bowel disease, polyposis syndromes and total colonic Hirschsprung’s disease have been managed at The Great North Children’s Hospital since 1988. Children who have required a total colectomy to cure or control their disease, have been reconstructed with an ileo-anal pouch. This procedure involves taking the end of the small bowel to construct a reservoir which is attached to the anus (ileal pouch anal anastomosis (IPAA)) to allow defaecation through the anus, with avoidance of a long term stoma.

All children who have been managed at the Great North Children’s Hospital have been recorded. This is the largest single-centre cohort of children undergoing the procedure in the UK.

The aims of this study are to investigate the long-term outcomes of patients with IPAA. The main outcomes of the study are:
    1. To investigate the fertility rates in women
    2. To investigate self-reported sexual function in men and women
    3. To establish the rate of pouch loss
    4. To find out the functional outcomes of the pouch
    5. To establish the rate of diagnostic change in patients initially diagnosed with ulcerative colitis.
