Research summary
This study will be performed using data from Information Services Division, NHS Scotland. Data is being sought on patients who had liver surgery between 1990 and 2012 (for colorectal liver metastases), ensuring all patients will have a minimum of 3 years follow-up. This will include details of the surgery itself as well as details of the individual’s co-morbidities. No patients or clinicians will be directly contacted in the pursuance of this study.
The primary aim of this study is to study aims to establish the long-term outcomes following resectional liver surgery in Scotland, and identify those factors which predict a good long-term outcome.
The secondary aims are to assess whether there is equity of access to resectional liver surgery for patients across Scotland, and whether outcomes from those centers providing this type of surgery are comparable.
This study will establish the long-term outcomes following liver surgery in Scotland. This will enable better information to be provided to patients who are considering such surgery, who will then be able to make a fully informed choice about proceeding with surgery.
Identification of factors associated with a favorable outcome may also facilitate clinicians in identifying those patients who are most suitable for surgery.Analysis of equity of access to liver surgery will identify if there are particular areas or groups which are not being adequately provided for by the present service to ensure all centers can provide optimum care.
We would also require information for patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer and colorectal liver metastases per health board region over this time period to calculate the proportion diagnosed with colorectal liver metastases and the proportion of these patients who have been operated on. This will give an improved understanding of the patients who are treated conservatively and allow comparison to the surgically treated group.
