Data collection arrangements
Observational data on patients with benign Upper GI conditions will be recorded. This includes symptoms, results of investigations, management and clinical follow-up data that allow the care team to guage the success of treatment. Data will be stored securely within the trust by the Clinical care team on a dedicated Database. This would be saved and backed up securely on the server and adhere to all trust, IT and governance guidelines. Data transfer would use secure, encrypted email or memory devices. No unnecessary patient identifiers would be collected.
Research programme
The benign Upper GI research team consists of a multi-disciplinary group of professionals all of whom are part of the care team delivering / supporting the delivery of care to this patient group. The patient group includes those referred to the Upper GI unit with benign conditions such as acid reflux, achalasia (or other swallowing difficulties) and Barrett’s oesophagus. The core research group will review any requests for access to the data for clinical studies, ensuring compliance with guidelines. The community supported by the ability to collect this data will not only include patients historically treated, but also those attending for investigation in the future for whom we will be able to provide far more accurate information regarding their likely outcomes.
