  • Research summary

This will be a retrospective observational study of the elderly population admitted to the critical care unit at Aintree University Hospital. We will undertake a search of the MIDAS and MedICU databases to identify patients over 80 years of age who were admitted to the critical care from January 2010 onwards. For these patients we will collect in depth information about their acute physiological status in the first 24 hours of admission along with their pre-existing co-morbidities. All of this information is readily available in patients exisiting records and the online MIDAS database and is done so for all patients admitted to critical care, whether or not they are included in this study. In addition, information regarding hospital discharge status and 12 month survival will be collected. The aim of the study is to see whether we can predict survival in this cohort based upon the multiple physiological variables collected in the first 24 hours of admission as well as the impact of pre hospital co-morbidity status on survival. We endeavour to gauge whether age impacts on mortality as an independent variable, in isolation to other physiological parameters. In patients who survive after critical care we intend to send out a questionnaire to assess their functional and psychological well being after their critical care admission.
