Research summary
Blepharokeratoconjunctivitis (BKC) is a type of inflammation of the surface of the eye and eyelids. It is a common diagnosis in children. Since it can be sight-threatening and affect a child’s quality of life, early recognition and treatment are critical. The disease is underrecognized and poorly defined and in many cases there is a considerable delay between onset and clinical diagnosis. No treatment guidelines are available especially for children.
In this study we propose to systematically document clinical findings of BKC, using photographic techniques, to allow accurate grading of disease activity and damage to ocular tissues. This new grading system will be useful for both clinical practice and future clinical trials. We will enrol children with a diagnosis of BKC and are about to start taking eyedrops or an antibiotic syrup; we plan to take one set of pictures at diagnosis, and to repeat the photos four and eight weeks later, to see whether the images reflect an improvement with treatment. In addition, we will collect a tiny tear sample and a swab of the lid margin to identify the causes of this condition.REC name
