  • Research summary

The ‘Our Visit’ study will explore how meaningful activity might be facilitated for people with dementia when they are in hospital. It has the potential to benefit people with dementia, their caregivers and the professionals who work with them.
    Research question:
What methods and resources enable caregiver visitors of older people with dementia to engage in meaningful activities together within community hospitals?
    Study information:
Older people with dementia suffer significant health inequalities compared to those without a dementia diagnosis, including poorer outcomes from an inpatient hospital stay. This study aims to co-create an innovative community hospital-based intervention-Our Visit-to improve the activity participation of older people with dementia with their caregivers. Developing an intervention based on meaningful activity participation creates improved conditions for health. Funding of £5000 has been secured from The Queen’s Nursing Institute, Scotland (QNIS) for a short, qualitative research study of 12 months duration.
Data will be collected by inviting family caregivers and community hospital-based professionals with an interest in the needs of people with dementia, to take part in a maximum of two focus groups. Written informed consent will be obtained from participants and research participation will be voluntary. Following appreciative inquiry research methods, focus groups will be used to explore and co-create methods and resources for activities that can take place at community hospital visiting times. Focus groups will be audio-recorded, with consent, transcribed verbatim and anonymised. Transcript data will be analysed using thematic analysis. Outcomes from this project, which may include developing an activity ‘toolkit’ for testing, will seed a larger study investigating activity participation for older people with dementia with their caregivers, not necessarily limited to community hospital environments.
