Research summary
Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that aims to correct anomalies in the position and relationship of teeth, known as malocclusion. Orthodontic treatment is provided by the NHS to those judged to have signs or symptoms arising from the malocclusion that would benefit from correction . A number of studies have looked at the impact of untreated malocclusion but less is known about satisfaction with outcome from treatment. Furthermore, few studies have investigated the relationship between pre-treatment factors, experience during orthodontic treatment and satisfaction following treatment.
The Orthodontic Treatment Patient Satisfaction Questionnaire (OTPSQ)has been developed and validated to enable measurement of patient-reported experience of malocclusion and orthodontic treatment. The questionnaire has three sections 1) Pre-treamtent factors: problems, symptoms, expectations and information provision 2) Treatment: type of treatment, complications and experience of treatment 3) Outcome: effect on problems and symptoms, satisfaction.
This study aims to measure pre-treatment factors, experience of treatment and perceived outcome using the OTPSQ in primary and secondary care settings in Yorkshire. We hope to identify the factors that may influence satisfaction and from this, potential areas where orthodontic treatment may be improved.
