  • Research summary

Rehabilitation services provide mental healthcare for people who have significant mental health difficulties who require interventions to improve their wellbeing and independence. The proposed research aims to explore the outcomes of people who access inpatient and community rehabilitation services. There is little evidence for the effectiveness of community rehabilitation services, but national policies have required the creation of community rehabilitation teams. Therefore, this research may be able to provide recommendations on designing effective services for this client group.
This research aims to follow up people who are discharged from inpatient rehabilitation units for up to a year. The research will use questionnaire measures and qualitative interviews to assess outcomes. All inpatients within rehabilitation services who have the capacity to consent will be offered the opportunity to participate in this research on discharge from rehabilitation hospitals. Qualitative interviews will establish service users’ views of the care that they have received. This research will aim to understand outcomes in relation to these variables. Study visits will be conducted on discharge from hospital, and at 12 weeks, 6 months and 12 months post-discharge.

Planned Study Period: May 2024-June 2028
    Research aims:
1)to establish whether there are differences between discharge pathways according to demographic or clinical characteristics.
    2) to review outcomes for service users up to one-year post-discharge from hospital. These outcomes will include readmission to hospital, satisfaction with life and services, and self-reported mental health.
    3) to see whether outcomes vary according to demographic or clinical characteristics
    4) to explore service users’ experiences of the care that they received post-hospital discharge.
    5) if sample size allows, to compare outcomes for service users discharged under different pathways, including the different pathways within the Community Enhanced Rehabilitation Team
