Research summary
The aim of this study is to investigate the effects that certain chemicals commonly used within toothpastes have on the inside of the mouth (the "oral mucosa"). Within the study, there are two toothpastes being tested - one called Zendium, and another containing SLS (sodium lauryl sulphate). Participants in the study will be issued with the toothpastes to use and will attend the Dental Hospital to have the inside of their mouth assessed. In particular, we are looking for "sloughing". Sloughing is when some of the tissue in the mouth sheds away. Previous research has suggested that SLS contributes to sloughing within the mouth and if we can show that Zendium is a milder alternative, we may be able to develop more comfortable and more effective toothpastes.
An additional objective of this study is to develop a scoring system that can be used in future to measure the sloughing effects of toothpastes and other oral products. This would allow manufacturers and researchers to easily compare the sloughing effects of products.
