Research summary
We know that there is a gap in clinical practice in the United Kingdom (UK) in preconception healthcare. We are failing to help people plan their reproductive life and are missing opportunities to improve health outcomes in the pre-natal, peri-natal and post-natal period. To date, there has been no way of screening patients for their pregnancy desires or reproductive health plans in the UK. To address this gap, we have designed and developed Orchid, a is goal-orientated, personalised digital health tool that focuses on health promotion and empowerment. It is designed to help people of reproductive age think about their reproductive health at an earlier stage and develop a reproductive life plan.
This study will pilot our new digital tool, called Orchid. We will initially work with healthcare professionals to provide education sessions on preconception health and explain how Orchid can help their patients and their consultations. We will then recruit patients of all genders of reproductive age, from multiple community healthcare sites to download and use Orchid. We will analyse data gained from Orchid, such as usage, engagement and click-through rates. Following this, we will interview patients to understand their experience of using Orchid as well as healthcare professionals, to see if this tool is helpful and feasible to use in practice.
