Research summary
The previous ORBIT randomised control trial (RCT) indicated that online, therapist-supported ERP is clinically and cost-effective for reducing tic symptoms in young people, with sustained long-term benefits. Despite this, the ORBIT intervention was exclusively delivered as part of the trial using the Swedish system BiP-TiC (Hollis et al., 2021) and is currently not available as a patient-ready product in the UK. To be able to launch ORBIT-UK as a patient-ready product within the NHS, we need to re-develop the original ORBIT content on to an NHS-compliant platform, and then test the usability of this platform.
This study aims to test the usability of the ORBIT-UK platform and service pathway. The intervention will be developed from the previous trial into an NHS-ready clinical product suitable for commercial investment, adoption and NHS commissioning in the UK. The study design is a single cohort study to assess uptake, acceptability, usability, and performance of ORBIT-UK delivered via a UK-based platform in an NHS tic service. This study also aims to identify strengths and weaknesses of the platform through real-world evaluation; gather feedback from key stakeholders on feasibility and acceptability and compare baseline-post intervention clinical outcome measures. Given the efficacy and acceptability of the previous ORBIT trial, it should be feasible to now adopt at scale in the NHS, improving access to evidence-based behavioural therapy for children and young people with tics.
