  • Research summary

A one armed feasibility trial is proposed to explore the feasibility and acceptability of a migrant-specific multidisciplinary care plan (the ORAMMA model)to health care providers, maternity peer supporters and women . The ORAMMA model is an integrated, woman centered, culturally sensitive, and evidence based approach for migrant asylum seeking and refugee women throughout the whole perinatal journey; including detection of pregnancy, antenatal period, birth and after birth. This approach facilitated by multidisciplinary teams including midwives, social support workers and maternity peer supporters (MPS), with the active participation of women from migrant and refugee communities, to ensure a safe journey to motherhood. This model brings existing good practices together and is in line with the recommendations from NICE guidance for women with complex social factors (NICE 2010) with the following principles:
    a) a closer working relationship among all care providers, co-ordinated by the midwife to ensure consistency and effective communication
    b) allocation of maternity peer supporters to enhance access and cultural competency
    c) training care providers with a specific focus on psychosocial aspects of care and a particular emphasis on providing culturally sensitive, trauma aware and high quality care for migrant women
The study will include both quantitative and qualitative approaches. In addition to exploring the practicality of our quantitative and qualitative data collection processes, the willingness of women to be recruited to the trial will be established, along with exploring the acceptability of the care model by mothers, care professionals and maternity peer supporters.
