Research summary
Central nervous system infections carry significant mortality and morbidity and can occur in the brain or spine. In a considerable proportion of patients admitted with CNS infection, the source of infection is not identified. The result is that source control cannot be effectively carried out, and that prophylactic measures cannot be put in place for at-risk groups. The oral cavity is host to a large number of bacterial species but their role in the development of CNS infections and the link with oral hygiene has not been systematically explored. The aim of this study is to explore the feasibility of taking oral microbiome samples in patients with CNS infections in order to determine whether it is possible to run a larger scale trial to investigate the role of the oral microbiome in CNS infections.
