Research summary
Early Childhood Caries (ECC) refers to severe tooth decay affecting the milk teeth of a young child. It can progress rapidly and can affect the child's oral-health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) through pain, infection and subsequent disturbance to their day to day activities e.g. eating, drinking, sleeping etc. Children with medical problems may suffer to a greater extent and in some cases ECC may pose a greater risk to their overall health status depending on their condition. Furthermore these children are often more likely to require inpatient general anaesthesia(GA) to treat them effectively due to behavioural issues, higher levels of dental anxiety and the need for greater control/ monitoring of their condition during the treatment period. This study aims to measure changes in parent-assessed OHRQoL before and after dental treatment under GA for this cohort of patients.
