Research summary
The PREVENT dementia program aims to identify biological and behavioural indicators of early Alzheimer’s dementia (AD), which may lead to early intervention. Periodontitis (PD) is a severe form of inflammatory gum disease and both PD and inflammation have been proposed as risk factors for AD: this proposal will examine this further. Enrolling PREVENT participants who have also participated in the Amyloid Imaging in PREVENT (AIP) PET imaging sub-study and / or the Cerebral Spinal Fluid sub-study, and by using contemporary periodontal examination techniques, we will be able to examine the periodontal health status of the consenting participants and test the hypothesis that periodontitis is causally linked to early amyloid deposition in the brain.
