Research summary
Children with a cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) can struggle to look after their teeth and often have poor oral health. This can affect success of their treatment, including bone grafts and braces. In the future we plan to test whether a brief psychological intervention (known as implementation intentions) can help improve how these children care for their teeth. Before doing such a trial, we will carry out some qualitative interviews with children aged 6-11 years with a CL/P and with their parents. The focus of the interviews will be to explore enablers and barriers to good oral health and knowledge on this topic. We will also explore with parents the best way to recruit families to a future study in which we test the impact on implementation intentions on oral health in children with a CL/P. We aim to include approximately 20 children and their parent(s). Data will be collected using semi-structured interviews and examined using Framework Analysis. Participants will be recruited from a regional cleft service in north west England.
