  A cross-sectional study of elderly inpatients across 9 acute/subacute hospitals within the Northumbria Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (only), aiming for 150 participants, recruited by consent among those admitted onto the general elderly care wards. 150 has been chosen as a target recruitment figure as this is similar to the existing studies published on this subject. Data obtained by simple visual clinical examination of the mouth on the ward, with no specific tests or x-rays involved. Clinical records will not be consulted or involved in any way.
