  • Research summary

Oral hygiene is important to maintain a healthy mouth and also reduce the risk of developing a chest infection. The elderly or vulnerable are often susceptible to poor oral hygiene due to many factors such as poor interventions and awareness. many of the micro-organisms that cause a chest infection originate in the patients mouth that is inadvertently aspirated and may subsequently result in a chest infection requiring treatment and in some cases hospital admission. Maintaining oral hygiene in care residents may help to break this cycle.
