Research summary
Over half of the people living with dementia in the UK are in the advanced stages. People living with advanced dementia need help with personal care activities. These
include washing and going to the toilet. Sometimes personal care interactions can be distressing for both the person with dementia and their carers. Refusals of care are common in care-home settings. Guidance calls for more care-home staff training for dementia care.
This study will develop care-home staff training to optimise help with personal care and reduce refusals of care. Aiming to improve care for people living with advanced dementia in care homes. Although our research focus is on advanced dementia, it is likely that only residents with no or mild dementia will have capacity and be included in this research. The research team are confident that relevant information can be gained from residents with no or mild dementia.
Design and methods
This study involves working with people in care-home communities to co-produce a training intervention.
There are three stages:
1) Context mapping: Learning about refusal of care and staff training contexts and processes in four care-homes. Semi-structured interviews with managers, care-home staff, residents (with no or mild dementia only), and relatives. Review of documenting processes and policies.
2) Stakeholder consultations: Using information from the chief investigator's previous research and care home contexts. Consult with key individuals, including care-home residents, care-home staff, relatives, dementia specialists, and clinical psychologists.
3) Co-production: Meetings with a co-production team. Including researchers, people with dementia, care-home staff, and care home residents, and relatives. Develop the training intervention for care-home staff (OPTIMISED-DEMCARE).REC name
