Data collection arrangements
The OPTIMAM Image Database was established over the last 10 years with funding from Cancer Research UK lead by researchers at the Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust. It comprises de-identified medical breast images and associated clinical data from multiple NHS breast cancer screening sites across the UK. The automated process of image collection, processing and storage enables easy expansion across new imaging sites and continual collection of new data. The database comprises over 8 million mammography images, from over 660,000 women. Both 2D and 3D (tomosynthesis) image datasets of biopsy-proven malignant, benign, and normal cases are available for sharing with associated clinical data and expert-determined annotations including cancer locations. Data collection spans 10+ years enabling linkage of longitudinal cases, including interval cancer cases.
Research programme
The database contains 2D and 3D mammograms, breast ultrasound and breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), with expert mammography-reader determined annotations and rich associated clinical data, making it suitable for multiple research applications. The resource has been designed to be shared for research purposes, including in virtual clinical trials, computer-aided detection, artificial intelligence (AI), image perception studies and training and quality assurance. The database has played an internationally important role in the development of Artificial Intelligence tools for the detection of breast cancer in screening mammograms leading to a number of major publications and clinical trials.
