Research summary
How do people with dementia make decisions about when they should move to a care home? Is there an ‘optimal’ or best time for this move and does the person with dementia make this decision for themselves? Despite the growing interest in these questions, we do not know the answers. The study asks people with dementia who have moved into a care home within the last 6 months about how they made the decision to move. We will ask family members and carers these questions too, also asking them about the support they were providing their relatives just before they moved to the care home. Care home managers will also be asked how decisions to accept a potential resident into their care home are made, and what they feel is an ‘optimal’ time (if any).
The study is designed as a 3 year study, seeking to recruit up to 30 care homes in England. There are 3 parts to this study, Part 1: Systematic review of the literature, Part 2: Qualitative interviews with people with dementia living in care homes, their family members/carers, care home managers, and care managers/social workers; and Part 3: Factorial survey with practitioners working in dementia services using a series of vignettes to determine what set of factors contribute to making an optimal decision about a person with dementia moving into a care home. This SCREC application is seeking approval for Part 2 of the study: qualitative interviews.
