Research summary
Optimal Blood sampling site for Point of Care Lactate assessment. Raised Lactate has been shown to be associated with high mortality in hip fracture patients.Lactate Pro-2 is a hand held electronic device that measures venous lactate levels. It was developed for athletes but our recent study showed that it was accurate at the lower Lactate levels seen in clinical cases. We intend to use the lactate pro2 in hip fracture patients to assess adequacy of resuscitation and look at best methods of resuscitation but preliminary sampling showed excess variability in lactate levels taken from finger prick and earlobe prick. We want to compare three different sampling methods - earlobe prick, finger prick and venous forearm venepuncture. Venepuncture sampling was how we compared the devices previously. The blood samples will be taken on the ward and in theatre. For this assessment we anticipate 50 patients in this study.
