  • Research summary

There is currently a lack of evidence as how to best control pain from foot surgery. We seek to establish which technique of providing optimal post operative pain relief from the options of ankle nerve injection (block), forefoot (metatarsal block) or a combination of the two. As pain control influences return to function, we also seek to determine which of these approaches will result in an objective functional benefit to our participants. We will include participants who require surgical correction of a 1st metatarsal foot problem in a day surgery setting, who are willing and able to give informed consent, aged 18 years and above, but not if they have contraindication to general anaesthesia, nerve problems of feet, or had previous foot surgery. The study will be conducted at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King's Lynn over 2 years.
