Research summary
Routinely collecting patient-reported outcomes (PRO), such as symptom or quality of life questionnaires, can enhance care and outcomes for people with chronic kidney disease or other long-term conditions.
Collecting PRO data digitally, by asking people to use their smartphone or tablet, ensures that PRO data collection is feasible and sustainable as part of usual care pathways. However, people who are older or from socially deprived areas, may be vulnerable to digital health inequities. They may lack digital skills, or have no access to a smartphone/tablet or the internet. Previous research also suggested these groups are less likely to engage with electronic PRO (ePRO) data collection.
The current study will explore potential barriers and facilitators to engagement with digital health technology in people with chronic kidney disease who are older or from socially deprived areas, and propose strategies to support their engagement.
We will conduct semi-structured interviews with up to 30 people with chronic kidney disease who are over 70 years old and/or living in a deprived area, as well as up to 12 people who support them with using digital health technology in their everyday lives. We will also assess the digital literacy and health literacy of patient participants using validated questionnaires. We will recruit participants via renal centres, as well as through patient groups and community networks. We expect this research to contribute to improved engagement in ePRO collection across all groups of people with chronic kidney disease by supporting and optimising their digital inclusion.
