Research summary
Adults who are admitted onto the trauma wards with an injury to their leg will be asked to participate in this study if they were not taking opioid (morphine or morphine like) medication before their hospital admission. A nurse specialist from the pain service will ask all eligible people if they would like to be involved, provide written and verbal information, and take written consent. Confidentiality will be guaranteed. Those people who consent will be asked to complete a short questionnaire about their expectations concerning the injury and how long they expect to take painkillers. A record of their allergies, nature of the injury, and opioid medication use whilst an inpatient will be taken along with a record of what medication they are discharged from hospital with. Once the person leaves hospital they will not be contacted again, all remaining information can be taken from the records. The GP and summary care record will be viewed 6 months after discharge by the research team to see what opioids were used, for how long and how this was reviewed by the GP practice or hospital. The research team consists of pain nurse specialists and pharmacists.
