Research summary
There has been a well-recognised increase globally in the use of prescription opioid medicines in recent years. Such medicines are usually used alone or in compound preparations as analgesics to control pain in a variety of patient groups. Of particular concern has been the misuse, abuse and dependence potential associated with opioid medicines. Estimates of the scale of the problem of opioid analgesic dependence and associated harms are available for the USA but there is very little data for the UK. Furthermore, little is known about how UK doctors use opioid prescribing guidelines and medication reviews.
The aims of the proposed work are to:
1. Establish the prevalence of opioid analgesic dependence (OAD) in the United Kingdom (UK).
2. Identify the characteristics and profiles of OAD patients in the UK.
3. Establish the economic burden of OAD.
4. Explore the barriers and facilitators to general practitioner and other health professionals identifying and supporting patients with OAD.REC name
