Data collection arrangements
The data that will be processed and stored for this project will be collected from existing patient electronic health records (held on the Patient Appointment System, MediSoft EMR or other ophthalmology specialised systems). The data comprises registration data, measurements, clinical notes, images, demographics and other data recorded during the course of consultations with a consultant ophthalmologist.
Research programme
The research community which is supported by the database will include academic, NHS and commercial researchers along with RAIR’s own internal research projects. The NHS will have unfettered access to its own data assets for research following transformation and loading into the storage structures. RAIR and the participating organisations expect to put ophthalmology/AI projects before the Information Governance Steering Committee on a rolling basis and the first such project (Development of Novel Clinical Decision Support Algorithms and Technologies for the Real-World Management of Patients with nAMD), a collaboration between RAIR and four NHS Trusts, has already been drafted in anticipation of the data project. RAIR also has ongoing outreach with a wide range of other NHS Trusts, ophthalmology charities and grant giving agencies around support of their research objectives using data from the repository, with a broad ambition of maximising the research utilisation of the data for patient benefit.
