Research summary
This study relates to the current British Orthopaedic Association and British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons Standards for Trauma (BOAST) Guideline 4. This evidence-based guideline recommends standards for treatment of any open lower limb fracture.
The proposed study aims to analyse patient outcomes following definitive orthoplastic surgical treatment of these injuries sustained in the Wessex region, with initial presentation to University Hospital Southampton; the regional trauma centre.
With the development of regional trauma networks it is recommend that the major trauma centre has plastic surgeon availability on-site with the ability to provide combined plastic and orthopaedic surgical wound coverage with definitive skeletal stabilisation within 72 hours of injury, and this should not exceed 7 days. The Wessex region has off-site plastic surgery cover and therefore definitive treatment has regularly exceeded this guideline, or taken place in the regional plastic surgery unit in Salisbury District Hospital.
All suitable patients will be identified through the Trauma Audit & Research Network database and will be invited to take part in the research project. Participants will be invited to a clinical consultation where patient reported outcome measurement questionnaires will be completed, in addition to the collection of other qualitative data. Those unable to attend clinical consultation will be offered a telephone interview and questionnaires will be posted to their address.
We anticipate the number of those eligible to take part will be no more than 100. Our aim in to complete data collection during the 2018 year.
